The March of the Weavers Audio Essay is an 8-minute audio essay that uses original music, narration, and writing to analyze and contextualize a famous print by the Prussian/German artists Käthe Kollwitz.
The audio essay was composed in Ableton using voice narration performed by myself and my friend Quetzali, as well as music composed by me and SFX from freesound.org. The script is based on a essay I wrote on the same topic, and my goal was to try to communicate the essential elements of the paper through sound.
The essay features sections that visually analyze the image, provide background information on Kollwitz’s life in the late 1800s and early to mid 1900s, and explain the inspiration behind this piece, an ensemble play entitled The Weavers by Gerhart Hauptmann.
